Projection Mapping: An Artistic Perspective

  • What is projection mapping?

Projection mapping, also known as video mapping, is a technique that uses video projection to transform objects and spaces into dynamic visual experiences. Through this technique, visual illusions can be created on surfaces, ranging from simple flat panels to complex architectural structures.

Projection mapping is generally accompanied by music and sounds, generating dreamlike landscapes and journeys of connection with our senses, emotions and environment.

Each surface is unique, therefore different audiovisual effects can be obtained, making each mapping unique and different.

This is where the idea of merging mapping with three-dimensional art in wood was born. With this fusion, we make each piece come to life and generate a spectacle of stimuli for the senses.

  • How does it work?
  1. Surface Selection: The surface where the projection will take place is chosen. This usually involves flat surfaces such as walls or screens, although it can also include three-dimensional elements.
  2. Content Creation: Artists and designers create visual content, which can range from animations to complex graphics. This content is specifically designed to fit the dimensions and shape of the surface.
  3. Mapping: Using specialized software, surface mapping is performed. This process involves adjusting the visual content to perfectly align with the features of the selected surface, taking into account its geometry.
  4. Projection: Finally, the content is projected using high-quality projectors. The projection is synchronized so that the images appear as an integral part of the surface, achieving a cohesive visual experience.
  • Applications of Projection Mapping

Projection mapping has various applications:

  1. Live shows: Used in concerts and festivals to create immersive and dynamic atmospheres.
  2. Contemporary art: Many artists use this technique to bring their works to life, creating interactive experiences that invite reflection.
  3. Advertising and marketing: Brands use projection mapping to launch creative campaigns that capture the public's attention in an impactful way.
  4. Exhibitions and events: At fairs and exhibitions, this technique highlights works of art and products, creating an attractive and memorable environment.
  • Flat Surfaces vs. 3D Surfaces

Flat surfaces: Projection onto flat surfaces tends to be more predictable, where images are projected straight and static. This allows for clarity in the display and a more linear narrative.

3D Surfaces: When projected onto three-dimensional surfaces, perception changes dramatically. Images adapt to the contours and shapes of the object, creating a visual experience that feels more alive and immersive. This not only surprises the viewer, but also allows them to interact with the space in unexpected ways.

Sensory Impact and Wellbeing

Experiencing projection mapping, especially on 3D surfaces, affects our senses in unique ways:

  • Visual: Projections create a visual spectacle that stimulates creativity and imagination. The dynamics of movement and color can capture and hold attention, generating wonder and fascination.
  • Auditory: Projection mapping is often accompanied by music or sound effects, creating a multi-sensory experience that increases immersion and emotional connection with the work.
  • Emotional: By interacting with works that use this technique, people can experience a wide range of emotions, from joy to reflection, contributing to a state of general well-being.
  • Physical: Visual and auditory stimulation can induce physical responses in the body, such as the release of endorphins, generating feelings of pleasure and well-being.

In short, projection mapping not only transforms spaces, but also has the power to positively influence our mental and emotional state, fostering a deep connection between art, technology and human experience.

Isidora… hermoso trabajo que realizas basado en la belleza geométrica y la perfección de la creación. Alcance a ver el final del reportaje en TV y fue tan potente lo que vi, que seguiré investigando sobre el tema… felicitaciones
